Huchuy Cusco Challenge
This tour requires a medium to high level of fitness for someone who is not acclimatised to high altitude conditions. It is designed to be a challenging 1 day ride. Although the climbing undertaken is mostly of a gradual nature the ride starts at over 3500m and attains a maximum altitude of about 4050m. The distance covered will be approximately 35 or 70 kms depending on how keen people are to continue riding back to Urubamba from Lamay after visiting Huchuy Cusco.

Departure - 7:30AM from Los Jardines.
We will be driven to Corao and arrive there approximately 8:30AM.

After unloading the bikes and performing a final safety check, we will embark on an ascent of approximately 450 metres, passing through Quechua farmland and villages, to reach the first pass of 4000 metres, after approximately 12 kilometres, giving you spectacular views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

A short distance from this pass will allow you more views of the valley including Pisac.
From this vantage point you can also see the village of Patabamba, a few kilometres further on in our direction of travel. Approaching Patabamba we will gain some speed as we descend to about 3800 metres.

After Patabamba we will start a gradual climb to another Quechua village, named Quenco (about 18kms), where we will be able to see some fine examples of Andean textiles being fabricated. You may also wish to purchase any finished products they have available for sale. All sale proceeds will go directly to the artisans.
At Quenco we will cross a small bridge to ascend to a pass of approx. 4050 metres where me may stop for lunch before continuing down the other side to pass through another remote village called Sihua.

From Sihua to the final approach, leading to the amazing descent to Huchuy Cusco, will require some walking as the trail is more like a goat's track, in some places, than a groomed path.

We will descend on foot by a path, constructed by the Incas, that zig-zags down the mountain side for approximately 1 km before we reach the south-eastern gate of the Huchuy Cusco complex where you will have plenty of opportunities for taking photos.

From Huchuy Cusco we have a descent, of about 4 kms. to Lamay, which will include some walking. If we have time we can ride back to Urubamba or arrange for a taxi to take us there.
