Inca Fortress of Ollantaytambo

After a short respite in Ollantaytambo, we pass through the Main Square to begin our ascent of the Lower Patacancha Valley. The slopes of the valley are covered with terraces created by the Incas and local people and have been in use long before the Spanish arrived. The ascent is mostly gradual and takes us across the Patacancha river 3 times with the third crossing initiating a zigzag ascent towards the base of the archaeological site of Pumamarca which was constructed, early in the era of the Incas, using stone set in adobe but still with great attention to detail unlike most of the post hispanic constructions. Once we have reached the base of the site, it is a short walk through ancient terraces to the shelter which is near the lower entrance within the surrounding wall of the principal section of the site.

Leaving Pumamarca we can now appreciate the views of the Patacancha Valley from a different perspective as we descend rapidly to Ollantaytambo where lunch awaits us.

After lunch we will visit 2 of the Tired Stones and the Inca Fortress complex and meander around the town to view other places of interest before returning to Los Jardines.
